When it comes to fashion I’m not exactly a trendsetter, but I know what I like and I know what suits me, so isn’t that enough? I’m often so late jumping onto the bandwagon that I’m the only one left on it, mostly because I get scared of trying something different. I was resistant to leggings, maxi dresses and even blazers, and I’ve now got a wardrobe full of these three things.

I’m going to try and make a change this year though – I’m planning on actively keeping my eye on the current fashion trends in an attempt to stay fashionable throughout the year.

So, to kick-start my new fashionable self, here’s what I think we’ll see later in 2012:

The Roaring Twenties
Even I know that fashion trends are constantly being brought back to life and reused in the modern age, and 20s fashion is set to be huge this year. The 1920s was the age of the flapper, when women were suddenly able to wear shorter skirts and much more comfortable clothing. Obviously, not all aspects of 1920s fashion will look good today, but think drop-waist dresses, cocktail dresses, blazers, cape coats and pleated skirts.

Sports(wo)manship

This trend is also linked to the 1920s, when women’s sportswear began to emerge. This season it’s all about hooded jackets, bodysuits, hot pants, shorts and tennis dresses. This look is all about the accessories, so pay close attention to them.

Pastel’s Back

I’ve done my research and I now know for a fact that the past couple of months have seen fashion magazines touting the importance of glaring neon colours for the autumn/winter season. Now that spring is almost here though, pastel colours are all the rage again. The key to wearing pastel colours is to remember that they’re supposed to be summery, so don’t be mixing any black clothing into your look. Go for a lighter grey or white instead to give yourself look ready for spring.

Return of the 80s

I was born right at the end of the 80s so I don’t really remember much of it, but what I do remember are my mum’s old jeans. She bought those bad boys in the 80s and wore then right up until 1995, when they finally gave up, but they had the highest waist you’d ever seen. Turns out that look’s back in fashion and I’m definitely jumping on the bandwagon. High waist jeans make your legs look longer and they hide the muffin top perfectly, giving you an incredibly streamlined silhouette.
